SERVPRO of Sugar Land is always here for our community when mother nature strikes!
The saying goes "April showers bring May flowers", however, there have not been a lot of showers this past April. It does not hurt to be prepared for storms though. Heavy rain storms can cause flash floods which can be tremendously dangerous. Flash floods can occur with little or no warning and can become deep and fierce very quickly. These waters move with great strength at fast speeds. Because of this, they can cause extensive damage, destroying buildings and uprooting trees. In addition, flash floods typically occur as the result of large or intense storms such as hurricanes where massive amounts of rain are released in a brief period of time.

Lightning Truths and Myths
3/17/2021 (Permalink)
SERVPRO of Sugar Land is always here to help!
It's important that we know our facts about the weather patterns to prepare for any future emergencies. Learn the common myths and facts about lightning during spring!
Myth: If it's not raining, then there is no danger from lightning.
Fact: Lightning often strikes outside of heavy rain and may occur as far as 10 miles away from any rainfall. This is especially true in the western United States where thunderstorms sometimes produce very little rain.
Myth: The rubber soles of shoes or rubber tires on a car protect you from being struck by lightning.
Fact: Rubber-soled shoes and rubber tires proved no protection from lightning. The steel frame of a hard-topped vehicle provides increased protection if you are not touching metal. Although you may be injured if lightning strikes your car, you are much safer inside a vehicle than outside.
Myth: "Heat lightning" occurs after very hot summer days and poses no threat.
Fact: "Heat lightning" is a term used to describe lightning from a thunderstorm too far away for thunder to be heard.
To find out more information about the myths and the facts about lightning go to www.lightningsafety.noaa.gov.
Dealing with lightning damages can be very overwhelming to deal with alone. Give the team of professionals here at SERVPRO of Sugar Land a call today!
Rain vs. Flood Damage
10/20/2020 (Permalink)
Do you understand the difference between rain damage and flood damage?
Rain damage is caused by falling water. A leaky roof or window can cause rain to intrude into your home. Gutters and downspouts can also be a big contributing factor to rain damage. It is very important to clean your gutters and downspouts to keep the rain away from your walls and windows.
Flood damage is caused by rising water. Improper grading, failing drainage, or rising creek water are all examples of how flood damage can occur in your home. Flood damage can also cause cracks to your foundation allowing excess water to intrude into your home.
If you or anyone you know experiences either rain damage or flood damage, contact SERVPRO of Sugar Land! Our team is dedicated to helping you! Do not hesitate to give our experts a call when disaster strikes! We want to help you restore your home “Like it never even happened.”

Understanding Tropical Depressions
10/8/2019 (Permalink)
Officially, Hurricane season continues through November and we can sometimes see some decrease in storm frequency in the last 2 months. The problem is, a Hurricane is one of many threats we face living on the beautiful Gulf Coast. Even a large tropical storm that forms close to land can deliver punishing amounts of rainfall, similar to what we saw with Imelda, which was just a tropical depression.
You may ask: What is a tropical depression? A tropical depression is an area of low pressure accompanied by thunderstorms under the right conditions for a long enough time, it becomes a tropical depression. The atmospheric conditions create an organized center of circulation producing maximum sustained winds of 38 mph. If the depression’s circulation strengthens, producing maximum sustained winds of 39mph to 73 mph, then it will be upgraded to a tropical storm. A tropical storm causes stronger and more damaging wind gusts, heavier and more prolonged rain and flooding, as well as a higher storm surge. If the system further strengthens to 74mph or greater, it is then classified as a hurricane.
Although Tropical depressions are the weakest type of tropical cyclone, they can still potentially cause quite a bit of damage. Tropical depressions can still bring gusty winds, heavy rain, and possibly storm surges. The heavy rains are particularly worrisome for us here as once the ground saturates, it has nowhere to go and sometimes ends up intruding into our homes and businesses.
Our team of professionals at SERVPRO of Sugar Land is dedicated to helping you during a Natural Disaster such as a tropical depression. Give our team of trained professionals a call because our crew is ready for whatever happens. If you or anyone you know is experiencing flooding or storm related damages, give SERVPRO of Sugar Land a call at (281) 313- 1338.

It is the peak of hurricane season. Although there has been very little hurricane activity, it never hurts to be prepared. Every business and residence should have a plan prepared just in case such an event was to happen. SERVPRO of Sugar Land is here to help you understand the different hurricane categories there are. Understanding the categories of a hurricane can help you be prepared:

Category 1
Sustained winds of 74-85 mph. Dangerous winds occur and may cause some damage. Damage primarily to unanchored mobile homes, shrubbery, and trees along with some coastal road flooding and minor pier damage.
Category 2
Winds of 96-110 mph. Extremely dangerous winds and will cause extensive damage. Roofing, door and window damage to buildings; Considerable damage to shrubbery and trees, mobile homes, poorly constructed signs, and piers.
Category 3
Devastating damage will occur. Winds of 111-129 mph. Structural damage to small residences and utility buildings; foliage is blown off trees and large trees blown down; mobile homes destroyed.
Category 4
Catastrophic damage occurs. Sustained winds of 130 - 156 mph. Extensive damage to doors, windows and lower floors of shoreline houses; total roof failures on small residences; shrubs, trees, and all signs blown down; mobile homes completely destroyed.

3/26/2019 (Permalink)
Storms occur with sometimes, little to no warning, in which case can make it difficult to plan how to prepare. However, by creating a plan now can help you stay prepare now can help you get ready for any future storms that may be brewing this spring. Understanding what these definitions from the National Weather Service can help prep you on who to plan for your preparedness:
What is a Severe Thunderstorm?
A thunderstorm that produces a tornado, winds of at least 58 mph (50 knots), and/or hail at least ¾" in diameter. Structural wind damage may imply the occurrence of a severe thunderstorm. A thunderstorm wind equal to or greater than 40 mph (35 knots) and/or hail of at least ½" is defined as approaching severe.
Severe Thunderstorm Watch
This is issued by the National Weather Service when conditions are favorable for the development of severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area. The size of the watch can vary depending on the weather situation. They are usually issued for a duration of 4 to 8 hours. They are normally issued well in advance of the actual occurrence of severe weather. During the watch, people should review safety rules and be prepared to move a place of safety if threatening weather approaches.
Severe Thunderstorm Warning
This is issued when either a severe thunderstorm is indicated by the WSR-88D radar or a spotter reports a thunderstorm producing hail 3/4 inch or larger in diameter and/or winds equal or exceed 58 miles an hour; therefore, people in the affected area should seek safe shelter immediately. Severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes with little or no advance warning. Lightning frequency is not a criterion for issuing a severe thunderstorm warning. They are usually issued for a duration of one hour. They can be issued without a Severe Thunderstorm Watch being already in effect.

What is a Hurricane?
8/7/2018 (Permalink)
What is a hurricane? A hurricane is a massive tropical cyclone or low-pressure system that generally forms in the tropics with winds exceeding 74 miles per hour. Typically accompanied by heavy thunderstorms according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). They can cause threatening storm surges, violent winds, and heavy rain storms. Because we are located near the coast, it is that much more important for us to be prepared for a catastrophic event like this to happen. Although there may not be many hurricanes brewing this season, it never hurts to be prepared for a destructive event like this. Below are a few basic important tips to prepare for hurricane season. First, make a family emergency plan. It never hurts to be over prepared for disastrous situations.
- In case of an emergency evacuation, know where to go. Have a plan on what route to take and where to stay.
- As mentioned in our last newsletter, have a basic emergency kit together in case a hurricane were to strike. Here is a simple list of supplies to have, but is not limited to the following: water, non-perishable foods, a flashlight, extra batteries, cash, a first aid kit.
- Stay informed, connect with your community through email or text notifications for any emergency alerts or keep a battery-powered radio handy.
- If you decide not to evacuate your home, prepare your home to have adequate supplies that will last you for several days.
Be aware, hurricanes are usually followed by a tropical storm of heavy rain that can cause flood damage. For more information about staying prepared during a natural disaster visit: https://www.ready.gov/hurricanes

So leave the restoration remediation of your home and business to our team. Consider the following to protect your property:
Myth: If it is not raining, then there is no danger from lighting.
Fact: Lightning often strikes outside of heavy rain and may occur as far as 10 miles away from rainfall.
Myth: Rubber soles of shoes or rubber tires on a car protect you from being struck
Fact: Rubber-soled shoes and rubber tires provide no protection from lightning. The steel frame of a hard-topped vehicle provides increased protection if you are not toughing metal. Although you may be injured if lightning strikes your car, you are much safer inside a vehicle than outside.
Myth: “Heat lightning” occurs after very hot summer days and poses no threat.
Fact: “Heat lightning” is a team used to describe lightning from a thunderstorm too far away for thunder to be heard.
SERVPRO of Sugar Land is dedicated to help you! Do not hesitate to give our experts a call when disaster strikes! (281) 313-1338.
Winter Storm
1/15/2018 (Permalink)
Does this seem like the wettest winter in Sugar Land? Temperatures are lower, more rain has fallen, and heavier winds have over taken Sugar Land. If we recall correctly, it has been a long time since we’ve seen these kinds of weather patterns. While we have no control over the weather, we do have the opportunity to keep the weather from affecting our homes or business. To help prevent weather related damages from hurting your home or business, apply some of the following to tips to protect your property:
- Keep gutters clear of leaves, sticks and other debris to help ensure it can drain properly. Make sure downspouts direct water away from the home or business
- Wrap water pipes in your crawl spaces with insulation sleeves to slow heat transfer and prevent freezing
- If you have a fireplace, keep the flue closed when you're not using it
- Keep a slow trickle of water flowing through faucets connected to pipes that run through unheated or unprotected spaces
Give SERVPRO of Sugar Land a call if you have any additional questions. Our team is always here to help when disaster strikes!
